eight-day weight-driven · 1804 · front hall

a longcase clock

strikes once at every hour, twice as loud at nine. the weights are wound by crank on a sunday, before anyone is awake. they descend through the trunk over seven days like a slow, pre-arranged decision.

kept by the eldest child of the eldest child, currently a woman who has not lived in the house for thirty-one years and who comes back twice a year to wind it. she does not stay long. she does not stop hearing it after she leaves.

field-note · the pendulum bob has been polished in a small oval where someone, somewhere, kept touching it.
