a small fire, in the back kitchen

a pan of butter, left on the heat for the time it takes to answer a door, caught briefly on saturday. the kitchen smelled of bread for the rest of the day.

a small fire occurred on saturday evening in the back kitchen of the second house on the lane. a pan of butter, left on a low flame while its cook attended to a knock at the door, caught for the duration of a long sentence. it was extinguished by a damp cloth and by the cook saying "no" very firmly.

no injuries. the custodian, who arrived at the door for unrelated reasons just as the smoke began, has been credited by neighbours with a kind of foresight which he himself denies. the cook is well, and apologetic. the bread that was baking continued to bake and was, in the end, very good.

residents are reminded that a candle left unattended is one matter, and a pan of butter another, and that both are best watched. those wishing to be useful in the next such event are referred to the bucket in the alley beside the kitchen door, which is, by long custom, kept full.
