krell · family butcher · est. 1903
modest, even at twilight. krell does not garland the window — no parsley, no paper ferns. he says the meat should be told what it is, and he does the telling. the cleaver lies on the counter because he is in the back, talking on the telephone.
his wife died in winter and he still hangs the lamp she chose, lower than he would like. the apprentice is fourteen and reads behind the cold-store door. krell pretends not to know.
field-note: the third sausage from the left is two days older than the rest. tomorrow it is the apprentice's.
