levente & goss · italian & colonial groceries · est. 1872
twenty-one jars and eight bottles, and not one label that an outsider would understand. levente writes them in his own hand, in his own shorthand, on small bone-coloured cards he keeps in a tin. goss, who is not really a partner anymore, comes in on saturdays to argue about coffee.
the rice jar has a slow seam of light along the back wall — the lamp catches it differently in winter. they sell to three kitchens on this street and one which has never been on any street. the dill is for the apothecary across the way.
field-note: the salt has been in that jar since 1949. you cannot tell.
