m. rensch · dispensing chemist · est. 1894

a chemist's window

four great carboys — magenta, sea-green, sulphur, violet — coloured water only, for the colour. inside the shop the real bottles are brown, labelled in copperplate, and arranged by what they cure. rensch knows them by reach.

he has begun handing over the practice to a niece who is studying the new prescriptions and finds his recipes touching. she does not say so. the windows are still his.

field-note: a moth has lived in the violet carboy for three weeks. the customers think it is decorative. apothecary · grocer · an inkpot · lozenges · midnight
